Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment and a walkover survey of the proposed site of a service track, ambulance parking area and range cabin were undertaken. The surrounding landscape possessed a considerable concentration of extant prehistoric features, although none had been recorded along the proposed route itself. Archaeological features of the historic period in the vicinity were limited to those relating to the development of the agricultural landscape, and minor lead-mining works. Whilst no remains had been recorded along the route on the SMR, medieval and post-medieval features in the form of a drystone wall, other field boundaries, the remains of ridge and furrow ploughing and a possible prehistoric ring cairn were located. It was recommended that the route should be diverted to avoid the putative ring cairn, and that the remaining features of archaeological potential shoud be recorded by means of a watching brief.
