Abstract:
An earth resistance survey was carried out at Monk Bretton Priory, a SAM and Grade I Listed Building. The monastery had been founded in c. 1154, and had been dissolved in 1538. Part of the site had been excavated in the 1920s. The survey revealed anomalies thought to have been caused by sub-surface buildings and structures, including possible wall foundations, accumulations of building rubble and a drain associated with the monastic building. Further anomalies may have indicated the presence of external passages, the remains of a monastic garden or enclosure feature, ditches and a series of pillar bases. The presence of discrete anomalies in the area of the cemetery may have indicated additional graves. It was noted that it could not be determined from the geophysical evidence alone whether the anomalies represented the remains of part of the main monastic complex, ancillary buildings or buildings associated with the later residential occupation of the priory.
