Abstract:
An excavation and a watching brief were carried out at the site of a new swimming pool complex which lay 20m to the west of the medieval town walls of Southampton, and was situated within a Local Area of Archaeological Importance. It lay upon land which had been progressively reclaimed from the River Test between the 18th and 20th centuries. A sequence of natural deposits was identified during the investigation. These consisted of ancient clays and gravels overlain by peat-bearing strata. The latter had probably developed during the Mesolithic or Neolithic periods. Two phases of reclamation were identified, the earliest being represented by a timber retaining wall of probable 18th century date. A stone river wall with possible timber mooring stakes in front of it had been built 35m to the west, probably in the 19th century. Dumps of material had been made behind the walls to reclaim the land. The remains of the Long Rooms, a leisure complex built in 1762, were also excavated. Signs of severe slumping of the walls were noted. Two phases of major reconstruction of the west side of the building were identified, suggesting that the subsidence had remained a severe problem throughout the life of the building. The Long Rooms had been demolished in c. 1890; substantial demolition depoisits were excavated. [Au(adp)]
