Abstract: |
The proposed offshore development would have had little effect on the remains of an early 19th century Royal Naval Dockyard at Mylor, believed to have been the smallest such dockyard ever constructed in Britain. The principal role of the dockyard was to have been for victualling and watering of ships. The harbour was also used during the Second World War by the US Navy for maintenance of landing craft in anticipation of D-Day. The proposed development would have covered a 'grid-iron' which was constructed between low and high water, with piled steel jetties (or 'dolphins') marking it's extremities, to facilitate the scraping down and painting of the landing craft bottoms. The structure was believed to have been the only one of its kind surviving in Cornwall and thus warrented appropriate attention. [AIP] |
