Abstract: |
A desk-based archaeological assessment of an area under consideration for redevelopment was undertaken. The archaeological and historical potential of the site had been studied, and the impact of the proposed development was assessed. This document formed part of the initial Environmental Impact Assessment. The study of the available sources, mainly aerial photographs and surface finds, indicated that possible Iron Age and/or Romano-British activity lay immediately adjacent to, and possibly extending into, the study area. An archaeological evaluation to the south demonstrated that the top of archaeological deposits may have existed as little as 0.22m below the present ground surface, therefore groundwork associated with the proposed development exceeding this depth would impact on any archaeological deposits. It was advised that a geophysical survey and/or trial trenching be carried out to help determine the character, nature and preservation of any deposits surviving within the study area. [Au(adp)] |
