Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was undertaken. The site comprised an rectangular shaped boundary occupying an area of approximately 421.29 sq. m. The depths of current basementing on the site was unknown and the exact details of the proposed development scheme were also unknown, however, there would be modifications to the current basements with areas of ground intrusion. The site was located within an Archaeological Priority Area designated by the London Borough of Camden. The proposed development existed within an area which had demonstrated a high degree of archaeological potential incorporating a wide range of human activity from the prehistoric period spanning all the way through to the post-medieval period. The Greater London SMR held many entries referring to archaeological sites and finds within the vicinity of the site. The site demonstrated a long history of human activity creating the potential for archaeological remains to exist upon the site, particularly with the presence of the Roman road. Geotechnical information revealed that gravel was present at high depths at just beneath present ground level, although the exact location of the test pits conducted was unknown. Potential archaeological deposits could have been removed by later activity, particularly with the introduction of basements upon the site. However, it was not possible to define the impact of previous development upon the site without information about current depths of basements and full details of the proposed scheme of development. It was possible that with the current paucity of information, English Heritage (the archaeological advisors for the London Borough of Camden) could advise that an archaeological evaluation be conducted prior to determination of an application on site.
