Abstract:
The course of an existing sewer was mapped across an area of parkland which abounded in earthworks relating to the medieval and post-medieval rural landscape. Fieldwork involved surface inspection combined with the cleaning and recording of fourteen trial holes, each placed to avoid obvious archaeological features. The test-pits had been excavated for both engineering and archaeological purposes. Those closest to the River Derwent revealed stratified deposits, including part of a wall and a patch of paving buried below dumped materials to the east of the river, and an area of road-metal directly below topsoil to its west. These features had probably been abandoned during 18th-century landscaping of the park. Resistivity survey was used to trace the course of the road more widely, appearing to confirm that it was aligned upon the east end of the street which had once formed the axis of the village of Edensor, itself shrunken by the landscaping. The road had probably led to a bridge over the Derwent, as portrayed in views of the early 18th century. A route for the proposed replacement sewer was suggested, with the intention of minimising its archaeological impact, although it was recommended that mitigation measures should include some prior excavation as well as a close involvement with the construction works.
