Abstract: |
A watching brief was maintained during groundworks for the construction of a detached house and garage in an area presumed to lie within a fortified settlement established in 1626 for French and Dutch workers involved in a drainage scheme for the Isle of Axholme. Overlying the natural sand subsoil a series of layers and linear features were identified containing burnt and discoloured sand and a small quantity of pottery probable 17th century date: the deposits were thought to represent the remains of one house or barn and a smaller agricultural buidling probably destroyed by fire during an attack on the settlement by the commoners of the Isle in 1651, or following the looting of materials after the attack.
