Abstract: |
Archaeological investigation beneath the floor of the tower took place in advance of the laying of a drainage system for a new kitchen and toilets. The most significant discoveries made were two post-medieval bowl-shaped pits apparently used to melt-down lead for re-use. In addition, a 19th century underpinning layer and an earlier floor level were revealed. Sealed by all of these was a clay deposit containing fragments of human bone, and provisionally interpreted as either a pre-tower churchyard soil, or as make-up for the earlier floor. [Au] |
