Abstract: |
The potential for archaeological remains dating to the prehistoric period was low with only a few prehistoric finds recorded in the vicinity of the site. The main potential for Roman remains was the possibility of quarrying in the vicinity of the site. Evidence for quarrying had been recorded at 32 Furnival Street and at Barnard's Inn, Holborn. The potential for Roman burials on the proposed development site was fairly high having been recorded at Barnard's Inn to the north-east of the site. Cremation burials had also been recorded in the vicinity of the site. The potential for Saxon remains was low but any survival of remains of that period would have been of local and regional importance. A considerable amount of archaeological evidence from the medieval period had been recorded in the area of the site, including the 15th century Barnard's Inn where a medieval chalk walled building was recorded. There was a high potential for the survival of post-medieval features. The overall potential for survival of any archaeological remains was low. [Au(adp)] |
