Abstract: |
Desk based survey of the site revealed a site from which may be evidence of late medieval archaeology. The development site was located in an area of extensive medieval and post medieval activity, part of the medieval settlement of Slepe, renamed in the 18th century as St Ives. The town was well represented in the documentary record with a mix of houses and commercial buildings of largely 17th century and later date dominating the present Broadway. Early map evidence, useful in assessing the potential of the development site, was used in this assessment and this report concluded that potential evidence from the site, including early structural remains, previous discoveries and its situation, indicated that the site was unlikely to contain archaeology which would warrant preservation in situ. However, ground inspection during the desk-based assessment confirmed the potential for further survey and that the most appropriate methodology was a structured watching brief. [Au(abr)] |
