Abstract: |
Investigation followed the exposure of a previously unrecorded length of iron pipe within a steeply-sloping pasture field immediately adjacent to a footpath situated to the west of the large Killhope water wheel. A small area around the pipe was cleaned an recorded. The pipe was supported by a wooden frame and may have been an offshoot from a watercourse within the present-day pasture field. A previously unrecorded line of flagstone running in an east-west direction towards the exposed pipe was recoreded in the same pasture field as the pipe. An EDM tie-in survey showed that the pipe was aligned with a bunged channel which continued northward from the covered culvert to a small water wheel situated to the east of the washing floor.
