Abstract: |
An assessment of historical and archaeological material pertaining to the area of and around 43-61 Prescot Street clearly indicated that the site lay in an area of high archaeological potential, included in the Unitary Development Plan 'archaeological priority area'. The sources examined suggested that the site lay within the area used by the Romans for a cemetery. It was, however, possible that post-Roman activity had removed burial deposits; quarrying for clay and gravel may have occurred before the 18th century. Small buildings were then erected on the site, followed by terraced houses in the 19th century. It was considered that Roman burial deposits were still likely to exist on the site, and a field evalution was recommended. [Au(adp)] |
