Abstract: |
The evaluation comprised a desk-based appraisal and the excavation of four trial trenches. The fourth trial trench indicated that a proposed interceptor tank would cause serious disturbance to well preserved deposits. Therefore, the entire depth of the proposed trench was archaeologically excavated. Within this trench deposits were observed which may have been part of a platform for the medieval castle. Embedded into this deposit were the well preserved remains of wattle fencing indicating medieval enclosures. Overlying the clay platform was a large wooden culvert, this would appear to be part of the 'Lothburne'; the main town sewer mentioned in texts from the 14th to 16th centuries. [Au(abr)] |
