Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of a site proposed for student accommodation and a church identified that archaeological deposits were almost certain to be present. The site lay within the core of the upper Roman town at Cambridge; evidence of Roman occupation excavated in the area included roads, ditch systems, buildings, cemeteries and a shrine. Late Bronze Age features and artefacts and an Iron Age ditch system had also been recorded, and Saxon settlement had been identified. A medieval castle lay close to the proposal site. It was noted that any new development in the area would require deeply set foundations, due to the local geology, which would result in the destruction of all archaeological deposits within the foundation areas. Trial excavations were recommended. [AIP] |
