Abstract: |
It was difficult to ascertain from presently available archaeological information whether any archaeological deposits survived beneath the present spoil heaps of the colliery. The construction of the colliery, railway cuttings, lagoons, roads and a culvert for a stream were all thought likely to have disturbed large areas of the former ground surface which may have contained archaeological deposits. The areas that did survive beneath the present spoil heaps may have contained archaeological deposits of any period prior to the 18th century. However, the survey of the material recovered to date had been unable to locate any activity in the immediate hinterland that might have suggested settlement within the development area. [Au] |
