Abstract: |
The excavation of a foul water drainage pipe prompted the watching brief. This revealed a number of grave cuts in the natural gravel, possibly dating to the Saxon period. The graves were overlain by a general churchyard soil, cur by later burials. Of note was the presence of several inter-cutting ditches just outside the limit of the churchyard. These appeared to be medieval re-cuts on the line of the original Saxon Minster ditch. Walling was thought to represent a former entrance and possible landscaping feature, although no dating evidence was found. A former path leading to the church was also identified. [Au(abr)] |
