Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a site proposed for gravel extraction identified that undated cropmark features lay within the southern part of the application area, with a particular concentration of cropmarks within the south-eastern corner. Geotechnical borehole and trial pit investigations in the northern part of the site had indicated the presence of a raised beach beneath gravel head deposits. It was thought possibe that the beach may have been overlain by terrestrial silts with potential for the recovery of either re-worked or in situ Palaeolithic material. A number of Palaeolithic sites, including Boxgrove, were known in the surrounding area, and a number of Mesolithic flintworking sites and stray finds had been recorded. Only a small amount of Neolithic material had been found in the area, although many Bronze Age artefacts had been found, and Middle and Late Iron Age settlement was likely to have been dense along the rivers of the coastal plain. The nearby town of Chichester had been of importance in Roman times. 13th century pottery had been recovered from immediately south of the proposal area, in proximity to a cropmark complex which may have reflected medieval occupation and/or field boundaries. An 18th century map indicated that the site had lain within marshy farmland at this time. It was concluded that important archaeological remains could exist within the application area, and that a programme of field evaluation should be undertaken. [AIP]
