Abstract:
A desk-based assessment of the site of a school which lay within a Conservation Area was undertaken. Part of the site was crossed by the ditches and bank of the Roman defences of Dorchester, a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Bronze Age barrows and an Iron Age hillfort (Maiden Castle) lay in the surrounding area, and a Neolithic monument of uncertain function had been excavated within Dorchester. Roman cemeteries had lain outside the town walls, and the remains of many contemporary settlements had been recorded in the surrounding countryside. The site itself appeared to have been used for strip fields during medieval times. It was concluded that a field evaluation and a geophysical or augur survey would be necessary prior to the determination of any planning applications concerning the site. [AIP]
