Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site, which lay within an Archaeological Priority Area covering middle Saxon London (Lundenwic), identified that traces of Iron Age occupation had been recorded in the vicinity, although little evidence of earlier prehistoric or Roman occupation in the immediate area had been found. The site lay towards the eastern edge of Lundenwic, and substantial evidence of Saxon occupation had been recorded nearby. The southern part of Weld House, a 17th century mansion, was thought to have lain on the site, as well as a series of 18th century terraced houses. The latter structures may have had basements, which would have truncated any earlier archaeology. On the basis of observations from other sites in the area, it was suggested that archaeological deposits could have survived to a depth of 1-1.5m below the level of one of the basements at the proposal site, and that deposits less than 0.5m deep could have been present beneath a lower floor. Survival of archaeological stratigraphy below the boiler room at the site was considered unlikely, although deep cut features could have survived. It was concluded that, as specific development proposals had yet to be finalised, an archaeological mitigtion strategy could not be proposed at the time of writing. [Au(adp)]
