Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken across the site prior to the determination of planning permission. Two trial trenches were excavated in an open yard to the rear of the building and 10 test pits opened by groundwork contractors were monitored across the site. It appeared that by the 17th century the frontage had been terraced. A number of pits cutting the natural gravels were recorded, sealed by a number of ground raising dumps. Also revealed were the remains of industrial structures, presumed to be kilns of the Lambeth pottery factory. No complete structures were revealed but a minimum of six structures could be demonstrated to have been present within the development footprint. [Au(adp)] |
