Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of a proposed commercial development. The area surrounding the site was well known to contain archaeological remains of prehistoric date. The only features encountered during the evaluation were of limited archaeological significance. They comprised post-medieval field ditches, land drains, and more recent foundations and drains associated with a series of horticultural glasshouses which occupied the site prior to investigation. The most significant find was a bracelet of copper-alloy wire with a pierced copper alloy bead identified as being of early Anglo-Saxon date (late 5th-6th century). The find was recovered from a post-medieval field boundary ditch and in the absence of any features or other artefacts of the Anglo-Saxon period, it was considered a casual loss which was disturbed at a much later date. This did not, however, rule out the existence of a contemporary settlement in the area, which may be located in future fieldwork. No further work was required on site. [Au(adp)] |
