Abstract:
The site was characterised by large quantifies of medieval pottery dating from the 11th to the 15th century and included a good assemblage of Stamford wares. Occupation consisted of timber buildings on at least two adjacent properties fronting onto the High Street and there was evidence for further timber buildings to the south, possibly associated with a second street. A. Evidence of burning across the site suggested a phase of clearance and demolition prior to a final phase of construction. In the final building phase a series of possibly high status stone buildings were erected in the 13th or 14th century fronting onto the High Street and a second Street to the south. Reused stone within one of the buildings suggested that earlier stone buildings existed nearby, in particular there was a single piece of decorated capital or stop. [Au(abr)]
