Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a day nursery, which was occupied by part of a medieval moat. Possible features had been noted on early Ordnance Survey maps of the surrounding area; these included a possible linear earthwork, ditch-like features and a small pond. It had been suggested that the early medieval homestead of Lady Godiva had lain on or near the site. During the evaluation, evidence that the moat had been at least 15m wide and over 2.5m deep was recorded. Possible post-medieval pits containing fragments of brick and coal were observed. It was noted that at least 0.6m of modern rubble sealed potential archaeological deposits on the moat platform; it was concluded that the proposed development was unlikely to have an adverse effect on any archaeologically significant moat fills.
