Abstract:
The assessment concluded that the Cistercians undertook the earliest water management of the site at the end of the 12th century, when the River Washford was canalised enabling the site to be drained. The monastic arrangement had included two fishponds to the south of the abbey complex, with moats defining the northern and eastern boundaries of the precinct. A number of leats were supplied by the eastern pond, one of which drained both the monks and the lay brothers redorter. This drain was modified following late medieval alterations to the south range, to serve new garderobes inserted into the ground floor chambers. Post-medieval drainage appeared to have utilised part of the monastic drainage system, with a new drain inserted leading from a well in the west range, through the former monastic kitchen and linking with exiting drains to the south of the south range. One monastic leat still flowed through the abbey precinct probably carrying storm water from the farmhouse range. Geophysical survey had indicated the presence of numerous below ground structures in the south transept area. [Au(adp)]
