Abstract:
The watching brief was undertaken on the ground reduction for an electricity substation. A large revetted north to south ditch was cut along the eastern end of the site. This linear cut, it was suggested, was the western ditch belonging to the 'Narrow Wall', possibly referred to in 1443-1444 and certainly known to have been in existence by 1593. This structure was, in fact, a huge causeway on which the road, which was to become Belvedere Road, lay. On either side of this causeway was a large artificial watercourse. After at least two periods of flooding and at least one re-cutting, the ditch went out of use and was backfilled with the blue/black stained dumped deposits. With the backfilling of the ditch and extensive phase of reclamation dumping occurred, possibly leading to the construction of the Timber Yard illustrated on Rocque's map of 1746. Later activity included a 19th century north to south wall set on timber piles and a 19th century well. [Au(abr)]
