Abstract:
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the groundworks associated with the construction of four warehouse units and was carried out in response to a condition upon planning permission. Prehistoric features were revealed which included an ditch and bank, three further ditches which appeared to form three sides of a rectangular field, a ditch on the same alignment to the west, and a later phase of ditch on a separate alignment. The latest ditch cut through a ditch of the probable rectangular field. Over twenty pits and probable pits were also excavated. These included a circular clay lined pit which may have been used to store water. This feature was dated to the Middle Bronze Age (c. 1450 - 1100BC) by pottery sherds which appeared to have been placed on its lining. The sherds were from a uniquely decorated vessel and were likely to represent specialized or ritual deposition. In addition a number of rounded and elongated pits were identified. These produced few finds, but the combined assemblage of flintwork from these features, as with those of the ditches, was broadly datable to the Bronze Age (or possibly to the Late Neaolithic Period). Several probable post holes representing fence lines or structures were also identified and were likely to have been of similar date. The report concluded that the evidence was not typical of a settlement, given the general paucity of finds, but rather was probably best understood as representing activity within the fields of a contemporary settlement.
