Abstract: |
Strip foundations excavated adjacent to the Lower Brook Street frontage revealed a build up of considerable depth. Most substantial of these deposits was a thick layer of probable dump material dating to the 16th-17th century. This deposit was nearly 3m deep towards the west of the site but sloped up to 2.5m in the east. Under this spread and across the eastern half of the site were paler, silty layers that contained Ipswich ware pottery belonging to the Middle Saxon period. The Saxon material may have been deposited along the edge of the brook that ran under the present street. [Au] |
