Abstract: |
The evaluation and subsequent watching brief was undertaken to inform the Planning Authority of the character of a surviving embankment associated with the Wylam Waggonway and later Wylam Railway. The work was carried out ahead of a proposal to lay a high voltage electricity cable along its route. Features predating the waggonway were revealed in places, this included a demolished stone wall with a metalled surface. The evaluation did reveal the form of the waggonway, and trackway artefacts were recovered in situ and included parallel rows of stone sleepers. The present bridleway embankment was constructed for the single line Wylam Railway in c.1875 and used colliery waste material dumped directly into the waggonway after the iron work had been dismantled.
