Abstract: |
Nalgo Lodge lay south of Elmer road and just east of The Manor House within an area of moderate to high archaeological potential. Little was known of the origins of settlement at Middleton but it was believed to have developed from a ribbon development along Sea Lane/Road during the late medieval period. The coastline at Middleton-on-Sea was known to have suffered extensive erosion since this period with up to 0.5km of land having been lost to the sea. The site itself had been farm or open land since at least 1606 but was likely to have been in agricultural use in earlier centuries. Farming communities were known to have utilised the fertile brickearth of the coastal plain from at least the Middle Bronze Age onwards. The first development on site took place during the 1960's with the construction of this building and the associated services. This was likely to have damaged any shallow archaeological deposits present though there may have been areas which remained undisturbed. [Au] |
