Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a new power station identified that very few prehistoric artefacts had been found in the immediate vicinity. However, Roman sites and artefacts had been recorded nearby, many of which related to occupation alongside the route of Ermine Street, to the west. Medieval settlements in the area had been documented, whilst a late medieval mill, 12th century pottery and a medieval ditch had been recorded near the site. 17th-19th century remains had also been found, although the site itself was not thought to have been occupied during this period. Archaeological observations were made during geotechnical survey work at the site, and topographic modelling was undertaken. The latter implied that no significant topographic anomalies which may have attracted prehistoric settlement were present. It was concluded that although the site had only a low potential for archaeological remains, it did have potential for prehistoric environmental deposits. It was recommended that a watching brief should be carried out during groundworks. [AIP] |
