Abstract: |
An assessment of the archaeological implications of proposed residential development on land at the Shephalbury Centre indicated that the site had a small potential for containing finds or features of Iron Age and/or Roman date within the northern half of the site. Part of the site had been terraced for the construction of a number of extant college buildings and any earlier deposits would have been destroyed in this area. Inspection of aerial photographs identified that traces of ridge and furrow earthworks were visible crossing the site on an east-west alignment, terminating near the north end of the site in a slightly more pronounced furrow, which probably corresponded with a field boundary shown on the 1779 estate map.
