Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken of 17 Queen Square, a Grade II Listed Building. It was proposed to convert the building from its current use as offices into residential flats. The building survey determined that 17 Queen Square could be divided into eight main phases of construction dating from 1709 to 1970. Documentary research revealed that the lease for the first phase was granted on the 16th June 1709 to a John Attwood, Mason. The exteriors of the Phase 1 building still retained some of its early 18th century features. There was, however, no 18th century features surviving internally due to the interior being rebuilt in the 1970s. The documentary research revealed that throughout the 18th century No. 17 Queen Street was used as a residential property. In the 19th century sections of the building were used for more commercial purposes, for example the rear of the property was used as a Public House throughout the latter years of the 19th century until c.1897. There was a dearth of documentary information indicating the phasing of the building; this was compounded by the fact that much physical evidence had either been removed or concealed. It was advised therefore, that the walls intended for removal in the proposed development (particularly those possibly containing the remains of blocked fireplaces) should be further investigated to determine a) the fabric of the wall and what phase they belonged to; and b) whether any of the fireplaces had survived.
