Abstract:
The entire area to be occupied by new roads and drainage features forming construction Stage One of the development was stripped under archaeological supervision. Pits, post holes and other features were generally sparse. However, a concentration of five small pits in the area immediately to the east of Wood Farm Lane yielded an important collection of worked flint, Beaker pottery and charred plant remains dating to the Early Bronze Age. Another isolated pit contained flintwork and poorly preserved Bronze Age pottery. Small pits and pit groups of this kind had been found on numerous other sites of the period. It was unclear as to their original function, and it had been suggested that the artefacts within them represented ritual or ceremonial activity rather than casual rubbish-disposal. A major series of linear crop-mark features examined during the evaluation trenching, representing ditched enclosure boundaries and a possible trackway, saw further sample excavation. Unfortunately no artefacts to assist in dating them were found. [Au]
