Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to the determination of planning permission for the construction of a hotel across the site. The site lay immediately south-west of Trafalgar Square and was in an area of considerable archaeological interest. It was on the edge of the River Thames Flood Plain, an area of growing importance related to prehistoric land use and soil formations. The area was just beyond the presently known early Saxon settlement of Lundenwic. The report recommended further evaluation in the form of a watching brief during any geotechnical site investigation and the excavation of trial trenches/test pits which would allow a suitable mitigation strategy to be undertaken.
