Abstract: |
Observation of groundworks associated with a new housing development was undertaken. A number of pits, probably for a mixture of quarrying and waste disposal were recorded, some of which may have been medieval in origin, though the earliest material from them was 17th century. Interspersed with these were various garden soil layers of mainly post-medieval date and a deposit of demolition rubble from which sherds of possibly residual 12th century pottery were recovered. Later post-medieval features included a soakaway and an apparently unlined well. Finally the stone and brick foundations for a number of buildings fronting onto Castle Lane were recorded, all of which were identifiable on maps of the late 18th-20th centuries. [Au(abr)] |
