Abstract:
The assessment was undertaken to identify and describe the extent and character of the known archaeological resource within and immediately surrounding the area of interest. No scheduled archaeological sites were located within the study area. Prehistoric features were located within the wider environs of the site, but there was considered to be low potential for the existence of such remains within the study area. The projected line of a possible Roman road ran beneath a proposed access road to the study area. Although there was no physical evidence for the existence of such a thoroughfare, circumstantial evidence suggested that there might have been a low to medium potential for related features. Features relating to medieval or post-medieval clay quarrying existed at the area known as The Marlpits towards to centre of the study area, possibly related to nearby brick-making. The features of greatest importance within the study area were the partially remnant series of ponds which ran between Springpool and Woodcote Hall, possibly dating to the late 18th or early 19th century landscaping of Woodcote Park.
