Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during the construction of a new sewage treatment works. The site lay within 500m of the historic core of the village of Tithby, to which the earliest reference was the Domesday Book of 1086. The extent of the village prior to1812 was unknown, the site was located on the edge of the existing village where evidence of settlement shift may be expected. Groundworks were monitored in all areas of topsoil stripping, i.e. along the access track and in the area of the reed bed compound. No dateable material was retrieved during the watching brief, and no archaeological features were identified. From this, it appeared that the medieval village did not extend as far as the current works; equally, there was no indication of ridge-and-furrow, so it appeared that the land had been some use other than arable.
