Abstract: |
The desk-based assessment was prepared in support of an application for the renewal of planning consent on the site of 15 St Swithin's Lane. The area was settled at the time of the early foundation of the Roman city, and archaeological sequences recorded on a number of sites in the immediate vicinity provided valuable information of the archaeological development of the area from the Roman period to the post-medieval period. The information provided by these sites was so comprehensive that it allowed a reliable assessment of the potential archaeological survival on the application site itself to be made. The report concluded that the present basement slabs would have truncated the main area of the site thereby removing most Saxon and medieval levels. Remains of Roman town houses would, however, almost certainly have survived above the natural subsoil. Most periods of Roman settlement were likely to have been present, except beneath Salter's Court where the deeper basement would have removed almost all deposits. The Roman remains on this site were likely to have been extensively disturbed by later pits and foundations, however, it was probable that the latest Roman levels would have been totally truncated. It was intended to construct a new basement slab at the same level as that existing across most of the site, and this was considered unlikely to cause significantly greater ground disturbance than the construction of the original slab. The proposed redevelopment would, however, reduce the slab level in the northern part of the site by 0.5 metres to provide a constant level throughout the main part of the building. New pad foundations along the front and rear walls, a new lift pit, and underpinning of the party walls to adjacent properties, may also have had an impact upon archaeological deposits. [Au(abr)] |
