Abstract:
An open area excavation was undertaken in response to a scheme for residential development. The earliest phase of activity on the site proved to be Roman, the base of a kiln, probably slighted soon after its last firing was excavated, and amongst the rubble was a bronze figurine, probably of a household god. Large ditches of the medieval castle were revealed, shown to have been rapidly, partially filled, possibly reflecting a period of demolition of the castle, or seige during the reign of King Stephen. Earthworks in the Inner and Outer Baileys were investigated. After the destruction of the castle a manorial enclosure and associated buildings were constructed. Three phases of development were recognised and recorded, dating from the late-medieval and post-medieval periods. Evidence for the farmyard, buildings, yards and cottages whose remains were finally levelled in 1998, had all accumulated from the end of the 18th century. [AIP]
