Abstract: |
A single trial trench, 21.7m by 3.1m with a further 4.5m by 1.2m slot, and 6 test pits were excavated as an evaluation of the site prior to proposed redevelopment. The evaluation allowed the site to be broadly divided into three areas: The first was the area of the yard and a disused warehouse at 4 Vandy Street. Below the floor level archaeological levels were mostly undisturbed. However, the nature of the site detemrined that the archaeological deposits were a very thin band of archaeologcially sterile marsh deposits covered by a very thick sequence of post-medieval dummps. The second area was that of part of 66-70 Worship Street that formed the corner of the building at the junction of Worship and Vandy Street. This appeared to have a thin band of reworked brickearth which contained finds of various age. No evidence of structures was found in this area. There was also a slim and discontinuous survival of post-medieval dumps. The third area was the east side of 66-70 Worship street in which the basement had truncated natural brickearth. However, in this once higher area of natural ground, there was evidence of some structural activity, a post-medieval post hole. [Au(adp)] |
