Abstract:
Two areas were excavated prior to the construction of housing, a new vicarage and a parish centre. The archaeological features revealed in area A comprised seven linear features, eight pits, a scoop, and five postholes. None of the postholes appeared to represent structural remains. Six of the linear features were on the same alignment and intercut each other in two areas. Gully 201 cut gully 200; both contained late Saxon/early medieval pottery. Both were also cut by pit 113, which contained four similarly dated sherds. Gully 202 and 206 were both cut by gully 205. Gully 205 was itself cut by a late post-medieval pit. Gullies 202 and 205 were both late post-medieval. Gully 204 was different in character; it was sinuous and aligned roughly northwest-southeast. It produced three sherds of early medieval pot. Area B contained three subsoil features, an oval pit containing the complete skeleton of a horse, a large, late post-medieval pit and a second pit, hollow or infilled furrow of similar date.
