Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a hotel development identified that it was defined as an Area of High Archaeological Potential. The park at Cricket St Thomas was Grade II* Listed, and a number of Listed Buildings also lay within the proposal area. These included a Grade II* Listed church of 14th century origin, rebuilt in c. 1868, three monuments in the churchyard, a former orangery, a garden house and Cricket House, a building with 14th century origins which had been rebuilt in 1786-1807. A manor house at Cricket St Thomas had first been mentioned in 1313; this may have been rebuilt at a later date. The site of the house was thought to have lain within an area later occupied by a kitchen garden. Sites of interest in the surrounding area included a saw mill, the locations of two lime kilns, a Roman road and the site of a chapel which had burned down in the 18th century. It was concluded that the possible site of the medieval manor house probably had the greatest archaeological potential within the proposal area. [AIP]
