Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a flood alleviation scheme identified that small numbers of Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic artefacts had been found in the vicinity, and that Bronze Age barrows were known to have existed within parts of the city of Southampton. Iron Age gullies and post-holes had been discovered in the area whilst a Roman settlement, Clausentum, had lain on the opposite side of the River Itchen, and some Roman finds had been recovered in the vicinity of the site. Important Saxon and medieval settlements had lain nearby, and the course of the 18th century Southampton to Salisbury Canal ran very close to the proposal area. It was noted that significant archaeological remains had been found within alluvial and peat deposits in the area, and that such remains could potentially have extended onto the site. It was concluded that a watching brief would probably be required by the City Archaeologist. [AIP] |
