Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed development site which had previously been occupied by a 19th century railway terminus. The three trial trenches revealed that archaeologically significant deposits survived beneath demolition rubble. The remains of walls in Trenches 1 and 2 proved the existence of 19th century buildings, now demolished, in the southern and eastern portions of the site. Floors and yard surfaces were also observed in Trench 1, and further building remains were found in Trench 3. A sealed cultivation soil in Trenches 2 and 3 contained 18th century pottery and related to the use of the site as a garden in this century, supporting cartographic evidence of this. Building recording works of three standing structures were undertaken, revealing that archaeologically significant features relating to the principal functions of the buildings and the many subsequent alterations had survived. All three buildings had originally been built as stables. [Au(abr)]
