Abstract: |
Phase 5 of archaeological excavation was undertaken at Broom Quarry. A total area of 3484 sq. m was excavated. Further to this an artefact survey was carried out at 25m intervals along the trenches with 6-bucket samples (90litres) of topsoil hand-sorted for artefacts. Phase 5 produced the least archaeology so far at Broom. Evidence was found for Neolithic activity and occupation - if ephemeral and isolated - well away from the monuments to the north. General patterns of movement at this time did seem to have extended into this area, as the artefact survey revealed a low-density 'background' of Neolithic flint. The two isolated pits revealed in Trench V supported this picture of non-intensive occupation. Their proximity to each other and the very different nature of their fills suggested perhaps a single visit - one pit holding the sweepings from a hearth, the other a selection of flint artefacts from an episode of knapping. The Bronze Age field system was shown to have extended right across the window of the landscape that the quarry provided. The ditches followed the same coaxial alignment wherever they have been found, and seemed certain to extend beyond the confines of the quarry. It was interesting that, for the first time at Broom, the field system had been separate from either settlement or monuments. Every phase of investigation had revealed Bronze Age field ditches, painting a picture of wide-scale land division. The extent of this system had ramifications for our understanding of 'land management' and movement within the Bronze Age landscape in this area. [Au(adp)] |
