Abstract: |
The development site lay immediately west of the moated site of Bentley Hall. It comprised a rectangular area of grassland with two ranges of animal shelters round a yard in the north-east corner. The assessment was undertaken in support of a proposal to convert the buildings to dwellings. The archaeological potential within the development site comprised the western edge of the moat, now largely filled in, and an area of ridge-and-furrow south of, and possibly west of, the buildings. Medieval occupation or other archaeologically features could have existed west of the moat, but there was no direct evidence for this. The conversion of the buildings and the construction of the access road, drains and external paving were all likely to affect both the moat and the ridge-and-furrow, and any other buried archaeological features.
