Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken prior to proposed redevelopment. The site was located within an Archaeological Priority Area, in an area which had demonstrated a high degree of archaeological potential from the prehistoric period spanning all the way through to the post-medieval period. Considerable truncation would have occurred to archaeological remains which may have existed upon the site particularly later deposits dating to the post-medieval and medieval periods, however, earlier remains dating from the Roman and prehistoric may have survived. Piling upon the site particularly for Southwark Towers was substantial, specifically within the central region of the site, however, it was possible that archaeological remains existing in pockets between the piles as well as surviving in less truncated areas of the proposed development boundary. It was recommended that archaeological evaluation of the site should occur as soon as convenient. [Au(abr)] |
