Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed development site which contained two extant earthworks, identified as undated but probably medieval strip lynchets. A small number of finds of Neolithic to Saxon date had been recorded in the surrounding area, and earthworks representing the remains of the shrunken medieval village of Great Cheverell lay to the north of the present village. During the evaluation, six features were recorded, including a ditch and two stone alignments. All but one produced 12th-13th century pottery, and unstratified sherds of late 10th to early 14th century date were recovered. Three undated flint flakes and a flint tool were also found. It was concluded that evidence of agricultural activity of the 12th and 13th centuries had been successfully located, and that the lynchets were probably associated with the medieval activity. [AIP]
