Abstract: |
<summary>A watching brief was carried out, as repairs to the site, which occupies part of what had been Southampton Castle, meant that deep footings had to be dug. Evidence of prehistoric activity and early post holes were observed. Excavation of post holes and a pit suggested intensive occupation in the late Medieval period; these features were accompanied by finds of pottery, roof tile, brick and slate, perhaps indicating the presence of buildings nearby, and bones and shells representing food refuse. A fragment of water-pipe was also found, indicating either that there were purpose-built drains for water disposal within the castle, or that the town's water-supply had been extended into the castle. The area excavated seems to have been taken over for domestic purposes at this time and to have remained in domestic use thereafter. {italon}Sec(abr)(1b){italoff} {italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} SOU 439 (SCC HM investigation identification no) |
